Why Every Runner Needs a Proper Warm-Up

When most people think about improving their running performance, they focus on mileage, pace, or training plans. But one of the most overlooked components of successful running happens before the first step.

A proper warm-up.

At Apex Personal Training, we work with runners of all ages and experience levels. One of the simplest ways to improve performance while reducing injury risk is by preparing the body for movement before every run.

The Purpose of a Runner Warm-Up

Running places repetitive stress on the ankles, knees, hips, and lower back. Jumping straight into a run without preparing these areas can lead to stiffness, inefficient movement patterns, and increased injury risk.

A dynamic warm-up helps:

  • Increase circulation
  • Improve mobility
  • Activate underused muscles
  • Enhance running mechanics
  • Improve overall performance

Most importantly, it helps your body move the way it was designed to move.

The Apex Runner Warm-Up

Before your next run, perform the following routine:

Hip Openers

10 repetitions per side

Strong, mobile hips help create a smoother running stride and reduce stress on the knees.

Walking Lunges with Rotation

10 repetitions per side

This movement improves hip mobility while activating the core and upper body.

Leg Swings

10 forward and backward swings per leg

Leg swings prepare the hip flexors, glutes, and hamstrings for running.

High Knees

30 seconds

A great way to increase heart rate and reinforce proper running mechanics.

Skips or Marches

30 seconds

These movements help improve coordination and prepare the body for impact.

Easy Jog

2-3 minutes

Gradually transition your body into your running pace.

Common Warm-Up Mistakes

Many runners make the mistake of performing only static stretches before a run.

While stretching has benefits, holding long stretches before activity can temporarily reduce power output. Dynamic movement is typically more effective before running because it actively prepares the body for movement.

Save longer static stretching sessions for after your workout.

Individual Needs Matter

Every runner is different. Mobility limitations, previous injuries, training history, and fitness level all influence what type of warm-up may work best.

That's why personalized coaching can be so valuable. At Apex Personal Training, we help clients identify movement limitations and create individualized plans that support their goals both inside and outside the gym.
